1LT Edward A. Mullen, Aide-de-Camp to the Field Artillery Commandant, came to the immediate aid of several children and one ambulatory adult after they were caught in 100 degree heat on Elk Mountain in the Wichita Wildlife Preserve, adjacent to Fort Sill. A park ranger and 16 year old hiker notified 1LT Mullen that members of the party were suffering from heat exhaustion. He immediately raced up the mountain, over difficult terrain, to render aid. 1LT Mullen provided much needed water, encouragement, and radio communications while staying on scene to monitor one of the group suffering from a mild heat stroke. He further helped to guide paramedics to the remote area to the location of the group. 1LT Mullen then assisted in the slow descent to the trail head. Additionally, he provided aid for at least four hours in 100-plus degree weather, without regard for himself.
