General Paul E. Funk II

Gen. Paul E. Funk II assumed duties as the 17th Commanding General, United States Army Training and Doctrine Command, on June 21, 2019. As TRADOC commander, Funk is responsible for 32 Army schools organized under 10 Centers of Excellence that recruit, train and educate more than 750,000 Soldiers and service members annually.

Funk was born at Fort Hood and graduated from Fort Knox High School. He was commissioned an Armor Officer through ROTC upon graduation from Montana State University.

General Funk has commanded at every level, Company through Corps, including:

Funk holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech communications, from Montana State University, and a Master of Science degree in administration, from Central Michigan University. He is a graduate of the Armor Basic Officer Leaders and Advanced Courses, the Command and General Staff College, and completed his Senior Service College as a fellow at the Institute of Advanced Technology, University of Texas at Austin.

General Funk is married to the former Elizabeth Yeosock and they have three children and two grandchildren.

LTG Maria R. Gervais

Lieutenant General Maria R. Gervais assumed duties as Deputy Commanding General/Chief of Staff, United States Army Training and Doctrine Command.

Lieutenant General Maria R. Gervais assumed duties as the TRADOC Deputy Commanding General/Chief of Staff on May 28, 2021. Prior to her assignment, she served in Army Futures Command as the first Cross-Functional Team Director for the Synthetic Training Environment located in Orlando, Florida.

She received her regular Army commission in 1987 as a Distinguished Military Graduate of the Lander College Reserve Officer Training Corps program in Greenwood, South Carolina, and assigned to the Chemical Branch. Her professional military education includes Chemical Officer Basic and Advanced Courses; Command and General Staff College; and U.S. Army War College where she received a Master of Military Strategic Studies. She earned a Master of Arts in Human Resources from Webster University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Lander College.

Michael D. Formica

Executive Deputy to Commanding General, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Mr. Formica was selected to the Senior Executive Service in July 2010 and assumed his current position as the Executive Deputy to the Commanding General, TRADOC in April 2022. As the Executive Deputy to the Commanding General, Mr. Formica assists the TRADOC’s Commanding General and the Training and Doctrine Command’s enterprise as the Commanding General’s civilian advisor responsible for the long term management and investments of TRADOC, as well as the effective and efficient organization of business operations and the civilian workforce. In addition, Mr. Formica assists the DCG’s efforts to support unity of effort and to provide continuity between the TRADOC Commanding General and the DCG’s as necessary.

MG Daniel J. Christian

Maj. Gen. Daniel J. Christian assumed duties as Deputy Chief of Staff, United States Army Training and Doctrine Command on October 23, 2020.

As the TRADOC Deputy Chief of Staff, he is the advisor and principal assistant to the TRADOC Deputy Commanding General/Chief of Staff and serves as the senior coordinator of staff actions with the TRADOC Headquarters, subordinate centers, schools, and agencies. He ensures the strategic analysis and decision support for the TRADOC Commanding General and Deputy Commanding General.

MG Christian received his commission through Niagara University ROTC and entered service in the Engineer Corps in 1983.

Prior to his arrival at Fort Eustis, Major General Christian was assigned as the Deputy Commanding General for Sustainment of 8th Army, headquartered in Camp Humphreys, Republic of Korea.

Major General Christian has served in a variety of assignments over his extensive career. His previous assignments include Commanding General and Deputy Commanding General of Operations, 412th Theater Engineer Command; Commanding General and Assistant Division Commander, 95th Training Division; Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff (G3), 108th Training Command; 4th Brigade Commander, 98th Training Division (IET Buffalo); Executive Officer and Deputy Chief of Staff, 98th Training Division (Rochester). MG Christian’s senior staff and command assignments include Battalion Executive Officer, Battalion Command, Brigade Commander, and Deputy Chief of Staff. While deployed in Iraq in 2005, Major General Christian served as the Senior Combat Advisor to the 3d Iraqi Infantry Brigade, 5th Infantry Division in An-Numaniyah as part of the initial ground war. Previous to his deployment, MG Christian served various staff duty positions as the Deputy Chief of Staff (G4) and key Battalion Staff Positions.

Major General Christian’s formal military training includes CAPSTONE, Joint Professional Military Education at the Joint Service School, the Army War College, Command and General Staff College, Combined Arms and Services Staff College, and the Engineer Officer Advanced and Basic Courses. Major General Christian represents the first generation of his family to have served in the military. He and his wife Donna have two sons. The oldest is a Civil Affairs Team Chief and their youngest recently enlisted in the Army’s 18x program and is in Basic Training at Fort Benning, GA.

CSM Daniel T. Hendrex

Command Sergeant Major Daniel T. Hendrex assumed the responsibilities as Command Sergeant Major, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Eustis, Virginia, on Sept. 2, 2020.

Prior to his arrival to Fort Eustis, Virginia, as the Command Sergeant Major (CSM) of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, CSM Hendrex served as the CSM, U.S. Army CENTCOM CJTF OIR for Iraq. CSM Hendrex held such prestigious positions as the CSM, III Corps, Fort Hood, Texas, and CSM, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, and multiple positions of leadership at the command level throughout his career.

A native of Norman, Oklahoma, CSM Hendrex enlisted in the Army in 1990 and attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training as an Armor Crewman at Fort Knox, Kentucky. In addition to his recent tour in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, he deployed to Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Noble Eagle, Intrinsic Action, Joint Forge, Joint Guardian, Restore Hope, Desert Storm and Desert Shield. CSM Hendrex was decorated with the Bronze Star with Valor for his leadership during operations in Al Anbar, Iraq in 2004.

He served in the 1st Armored, 3rd Infantry, 24th Infantry, and 10th Mountain Divisions; 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment; and the Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) both stateside and/or overseas; and as Squadron CSM in the AWG; Brigade CSM in 2/1AD; Director, NCOA Mission Command; CSM for CSTC-A; and Division CSM for 3rd Infantry Division. He participated in numerous rotations at NTC, JRTC, and CMTC throughout his career.

CSM Hendrex’ military and civilian education includes all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System and the Tank Master Gunner Course. He is a graduate of Class 57 of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, and was selected as one of the first NCOs to serve in a fellowship on the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Strategic Studies Group.
