Online conduct should reflect the tenets of the Army Profession. Personnel using social media must abide by instruction at all times, even when off duty. Commenting, posting and linking to material that violates policy or basic rules of personnel conduct are prohibited, along with talking negatively about supervisors or releasing sensitive information.

DODI 8170.01 establishes policy, assigns responsibilities, and prescribes procedures for:

  1. Conducting, establishing, operating, and maintaining electronic messaging services (including, but not limited to, e-mail) to collect, distribute, store, and otherwise process official DoD information, both unclassified and classified, as applicable.
  2. Managing official DoD information on the DoD Information Network and other networks, i.e., online.
  3. Provides a compendium of policies and procedures critical to successful online information management and electronic messaging.

DODI 1300.18 establishes policy, assigns responsibilities, and prescribes procedures for:

  1. Reissues Reference (a), under a new title, under the authority of Reference (b), to assign responsibilities and establish uniform personnel policies and procedures for reporting, recording, notifying, and assisting the next of kin (NOK) whenever DoD casualties are sustained.
  2. Establishes the DoD Casualty Advisory Board (CAB).
  3. Establishes a central DoD repository for casualty information.
  4. Provides uniform official casualty terms and definitions. 1.5. Establishes uniform guidelines for obtaining and maintaining emergency notification information.
