JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. — The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command announced the release of the Army’s Techniques Publication 7-100.1, Russian Tactics, at the annual Opposing Force Conference, complementing the TRADOC G-2 support to Shaping the Future Force. The ATP describes Russian doctrine and tactics, addressing the challenges the nation faces against the acute Russian threat. The publication, a product of the TRADOC G-2, provides a framework for understanding the Russian threat.

“[Threat doctrine] starts with the enemy,” said Gen. Gary Brito, commanding general, TRADOC. “Paragraph one is paragraph one for a reason. Understanding the threat enables a lot of things — how we operate everywhere from the individual level up to the collective level, how our Army as a big enterprise may modernize, how we see the threat both in the near term and the far term and educating [Soldiers] at every echelon on the threat.”

The publication describes Russian tactics for use in Army training, professional education, and leader development. It is part of the ATP 7-100 series that addresses a nation-state’s military doctrine with a focus on Army ground forces and tactical operations. The foundational topics include operations in offense, defense, and related mission sets, and task organization, capabilities, and limitations related to military mission and support functions.

This publication presents examples of tactics gathered from Russian doctrine, translated literature, and observations from contemporary conflicts.

“Army Professionals know their potential enemies and understand how they fight at echelon,” said Lee Grubbs, Analysis and Control Element chief, TRADOC. “This threat doctrine series strengthens the Army profession by providing professional military education and combat training centers with this critical knowledge.”

To ensure readiness and increase understanding of the new ATP, TRADOC G-2 will conduct a Leader Professional Development series. The first event will be held on March 22. Additionally, TRADOC G-2 is developing training materials and presentations designed to augment the LPDs and support to units.
